Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) are polymer materials that combine the elastic properties of rubber with the melting and moulding properties of thermoplastic plastics. They are flexible and stretchable at ambient temperatures, and can be easily recycled and reprocessed under heat. Properties & Characteristics Elasticity They can be significantly stretched and return to their original shape, similar to traditional rubbers. Flexibility They remain flexible at room temperature, even after significant deformation. Abrasion and wear resistance TPEs have good wear resistance, making them durable in applications subject to friction. Temperature of use They retain their elasticity over a wide range of temperatures, but can soften and melt at higher temperatures, making them easier to mould. Thermal shrinkage They can soften under the effect of heat, allowing reversible shrinkage and deformation without deterioration. Chemical resistance They are generally resistant to many chemicals, oils and solvents, making them useful in a variety of environments. Low water absorption TPEs often have a low water absorption capacity, making them suitable for applications where humidity is a factor Ease of moulding and forming They can be transformed by common plastics processes such as injection moulding, extrusion and thermoforming. Recyclability TPEs can be recycled and reprocessed several times without significant loss of mechanical properties Applications Automotive Sealing components, internal components, external parts Medical Medical devices (tubes, syringes, etc.) and protective equipment (medical gloves, etc.) Construction Waterproofing membranes, window and door profiles Consumer goods Sporting goods (shoe soles, racket tops, etc.), children’s toys, leisure equipment E&E Cables and connectors, cover parts and protections Packaging Films and sealants, caps and closures
