
High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is a thermoplastic polymer made from petroleum. HDPE is one of the most versatile plastics. It is used in a wide variety of applications, including plastic bottles, milk jugs, shampoo bottles, bleach bottles, cutting boards and piping. Known for its exceptional tensile strength and high strength-to-density ratio, HDPE plastic has high impact resistance and a high melting point. Properties & Characteristics Flexible Less flexible than LDPE, HDPE does retain a certain flexibility depending on its thickness and application. Its use is favoured for film production, for example. Translucent, waxy Naturally translucent to opaque, HDPE can have a waxy appearance, particularly when untreated or uncoloured. Weatherproof HDPE is ideal for outdoor applications because of its resistance to reasonable temperature variations and its very good resistance to water, including salt water. Good low-temperature toughness HDPE maintains its impact and fracture resistance even when exposed to low temperatures, down to – 76°F. Good chemical resistance This material is particularly well known for its ability to resist a wide range of chemicals. Low cost Polyethylene is one of the most widely produced polymers in the world, which helps to reduce the cost of HDPE. It is also recyclable, and its processing techniques, such as extrusion and blow moulding, are economical and well mastered. Applications Packaging Bottles and flasks, rigid containers (cans and drums for storing chemicals, oils and other liquids), bags and packaging film (plastic bags, stretch film and food bags). Toys Outdoor toys (slides, swings) and children’s toys. Hoses, caps Hoses (irrigation systems, drinking water pipes, ect) and caps (for water bottles, chemical cans and food containers). Films Tarpaulins, damp-proof construction film, packaging film for industrial and consumer products. Cosmetic bottles Shampoo and lotion bottles and cream and gel bottles.
